One of the three major car manufacturers from India, Mahinda & Mahindra started their journey in 1945. Though today the company is known for its farm equipment, especially tractors (and they are the largest manufacturer worldwide by volume), they started their journey by manufacturing and selling Willys Jeep in India. After making its name in the commercial vehicle industry, Mahindra entered the passenger vehicle industry with its SUVs and MUVs in the year 1993 with the introduction of the Mahindra Armada. Soon, it launched its iconic cars like Bolero, Grand and others to compete in the emerging SUV/MUV urban market which was dominated by mainly foreign brands. Today, it has a wide network of dealers and service centres all over the country, with FIDATO being the Mahindra-authorized service centre in Noida.
As the company started its journey selling Jeeps, the main focus of its passenger car segment was towards SUVs, MUVs and pickup trucks, which were more commercial than for passenger markets.
At present, there are 14 models from the company in the market. Of them, 8 are SUVs and 1 MUV. There is also 1 Hatchback and 4 pickup trucks from the company. The company also has electric cars in the Indian market.
This was the first passenger vehicle launched by Mahindra in the Indian market. The model was based on CJ-5 Jeep models and came with a 2.1-litre diesel engine. The external design of the SUV was very upscale in look because it was meant for driving pleasure rather than being a workhorse-type vehicle. The inside also had features that made this car the first SUV in India that was comfortable, road-oriented and meant for the whole family. It had AC, foldable seats, and moulded plastic dashboards. A more luxurious version was launched in 1998 called Armada Grand. It has power windows, power steering and other luxury features. The car was discontinued in 2001.
If there is one car that everyone in the country knows is from Mahindra, it has to be Bolero. The first edition was based on Armada design and even had the same Peugeot engine. The second generation saw a change in the engine, which was an in-house engine from Mahindra. The third generation was introduced in 2011 and had a “soft turbo” diesel engine with five-speed transmission. The current version on the market comes with a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 5-speed manual transmission. At present, there are three variants of Bolero, B4, B6 and B6 (O). Coming to features, it has manual AC, digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth-enabled music system, as well as power window and power steering. Safety features of Bolero include an anti-lock braking system or ABS, reverse parking sensors and dual front airbags.
Geared towards affluent Indians who love adventure, Mahindra Thar is a great off roader with two variants. The attention-grabbing design and colour of the SUV is one of the reasons why this model is so popular. The vehicle comes with three engine options: 2-litre turbo-petrol, 2.2-litre diesel, and 1.5-litre diesel. The 2.2 diesel engine comes with either 6-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual transmission while the turbo-petrol engine comes with only 6-speed automatic transmission. The last engine option comes with only a 6-speed manual transmission. The features of this SUV are very good, it has a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can play both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, it has halogen headlights, cruise control, detachable roof panel and an interior floor that is washable. The safety features of this 4-seater SUV are also good with dual front airbags, traction control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and seat belt reminders not only for the driver but also for passengers.
Another iconic SUV, this was more for families than for carrying passengers. It has stayed as one of the best-sellers of the company since it was launched in 2002. It was also the first model the company built for the world market. The model has seen major facelifts in 2006, 2009, and 2014 and the present one called Scorpio Classic was launched in 2022. This version is available in two variants, S and S11 and in 5 colour options. The engine is a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 6-speed manual gearbox. Coming to features, it has a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system payable through AUX connectivity and Bluetooth. There are also projector headlights with LED DRLs, auto-AC and cruise control. The safety features include ABS with EBD and dual front airbags. In 2022 Mahindra launched the second generation of Mahindra Scorpio, Scorpio N. The size of the SUV was larger than its predecessor and came in four variants and seven colours. It was also available in 6-seater and 7-seater configurations. This model offered one more engine choice than before, a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 6-speed manual as standard. Depending on the variant, both diesel and turbo-petrol engines can be mated with 6-speed automatic transmission. The higher-end diesel model also has the option of 4WD while the RWD setup is standard. The safety features and entertainment features were also more or less like the Scorpio Classic.
A compact crossover SUV, XUV500 was the first monocoque chassis-based model produced by Mahindra. It came in both petrol and diesel versions. The petrol engine was 2-litre while the diesel engine was 2.2 -litre. When launched in 2011, it came in two variants. It got a facelift in 2015 and another in 2018. Coming to features, it had a monochrome infotainment screen, ABS with EBD, alloy wheels, leather upholstery, six airbags, Hill Hold and Hill descent control and more. The car also saw a good sale in overseas markets, in South Africa, Mahindra sold over 1,200 units of this car in just one month in 2013! Introduced in 2021, this compact crossover SUV is going to replace the XUV500 which is being discontinued. The SUV is priced between Rs 14 lakh to Rs 26 lakh, which can be said to be a bit premium. It has two variants, MX and AX. The AX variant has further three trims called AX7, AX5 and AX3. The buyers can choose between 5-colours and 2-engine options. One is a 2-litre turbo-petrol while the other is a 2.2-litre diesel. Both engines come with the option of either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. The top-most model, AX7 comes with optional AWD but only with diesel automatic powertrain. The entertainment features of this SUV are good with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 6-way powered driver’s seat, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12 speakers and more. There is also a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and Alexa connectivity that is built-in. The car is also good in safety features with 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, an electronic stability program, and ISOFIX child seat anchorage. There is also TPMS, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control and more.
This is the electric version of Mahindra XUV300 and is priced within Rs 20 lakh. It is available in two trims, EC and EL. There are colour choices of 5 monotones and 5 dual-tones. This is a 5-seater SUV that comes with two choices of battery packs. One is 34.5kWh and the other is 39.4kWh. There are three types of chargers, a domestic charger that charges in 13 hours, an AC charge that takes 6.5 hours and a DC fast charger that takes about an hour to charge fully. The features follow the older XUV300 with a 7-inch touchscreen, connected car technology, single-pane sunroof, push-button start/stop and more. Safety features of this model include ESP or electronic stability program, TMPS, six airbags, and a rear parking camera among others.
The Xylo with a very robust design was the first MPV from the brand. It was loosely based on the same platform as that of the Mahindra Scorpio, a very popular model from the manufacturer. Launched in 2009, the model saw a good demand initially, but later the demand for this model was not that much. This was a diesel engine which saw a major facelift in 2012. The model came in a 7-seater or 8-seater configuration. The features of this MPV included dual front airbags, ABD with EBD and more. The model was discontinued in 2019.
The latest MPV from the company, Mahindra Marazzo was introduced to replace Mahindra Xylo. The chassis of this model was better than Xylo and has 52% of high-strength steel. Buyers can choose from three variants, M2, M4+ and M6+. Buyers can also choose from a 7-seater or 8-seater configuration. This is also a diesel car with a 1.5-litre engine and 6-speed manual transmission.
